Whether you like it or not, every business has it’s own personality. It can be formal, traditional, hip or an array of other styles. The reality is that for most businesses, this brand personality is underutilized or extremely boring. A large part of this problem stems from trying to fit in with current trends. When you blend in with the rest of your market, what leverage do you then have to differentiate yourself and start attracting your ideal clients? Actually how do they see you at all amongst the sea of your competition?

By now we should all be aware that standing out and displaying your true authentic self is crucial to building a brand that gets noticed and attracts targeted clients. In the internet world as we know it today there are tons of “me too” businesses, which makes the case for discovering your own brand personality just that much more critical. The definition of personality according to www.dictionary.com is “the visible aspect of one’s character as it impresses others. Pay attention to the words visible and impress. Your business personality is what’s visible to your target market and the tool that makes an impression on them. This is what allows them to emotionally make a connection to your brand and inspires them to do business with you.

Long before crafting a logo, designing business cards, brochures and the likes, you must first have a clearly developed personality for your business that will then be reflected in your collateral marketing materials. What does your business stand for? Lack of a unique personality that is consistently displayed actually makes you forgettable.

In order to have a successful brand, the personality of your brand has to resonate with your target market. Regardless of the type of business you own, your personality can be the difference between you and the next person being weighed for the job. There should be human elements to your brand that include personality, attitude and values. Cultivate your brand so that it encourages meaningful relationships with your market. Show up in your brand, by showcasing the heart and soul, dreams, and vision of your business. Give your market audience something to relate to.

Success Action Plan:

Like many of the aspects of developing a solid brand, defining the personality of your business brand can be perplexing. Stand in the shoes of your target market and ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is your initial impression of the brand?
  • Do you feel the current marketing materials best reflect the personality of the brand? If so, why?

Now if you could start over from scratch and develop the brand of your dreams, what would you do differently to best reflect the personality of your business?
